It’s been awhile since I have posted anything on here so thought I should.

Pinguy OS is still being activity worked on. There has been a release for 12.10 and a 13.04 release is being worked on at the moment. If you want to keep up to date with the development of Pinguy OS its best to follow the Information thread on the forum. This blog will be mainly for news on the LTS releases.

I have decide to keep the 6 month releases as beta’s/snap shots of what the LTS will become. The 6 month release’s will be using bleeding edge software that hasn’t been fully tested. For an example the 13.04 release is using Gnome Shell 3.8.1. (something that isn’t included/supported in Ubuntu 13.04 by default).

The 6 month Pinguy OS releases will be missing features that will be in the final LTS, but the release will be very usable. It just won’t be at a stage where I am happy to call it stable due to missing features or things not quite working as they should. The goal of the 6 month releases is to help give users insight and influence on where Pinguy OS is heading and help shape the LTS release.

For people that have missed it, here is a video of the 12.10 release that can be downloaded from here.

We get a lot of users asking us questions in the forums about how to go about installing PinguyOS. This may be a very mundane task to the hardened Linux user, but for more basic users and users that are new to Linux, this can be a very daunting task. So we decided to listen to our users and create a PinguyOS 12.04 installation guide.

The guide can be found in the support section of our website, there is also a direct link below. For convenience, we have also added a PDF download link to the bottom of the guide so you can print it off and take it away.

We hope that this guide serves a purpose to help our users install PinguyOS in a worry free environment. As always though, if you need further help there is always our support forums and IRC chat.

Here is the final release of Pinguy OS 12.04 LTS. As you may have noticed, we have had a website redesign to reflect this great new release. We have fully embraced GNOME Shell here and wanted a modern, updated site to go with the new look of the desktop.

In this release we have:

  • Linux Kernel 3.2.0-25
  • GNOME 3.4.1
  • Wine 1.5.6
  • Skype 4.0
  • TeamViewer 7
  • XBMC-PVR 11.0 Eden
  • GNOME Shell Extension Updater
  • Everything else that was present in the previous Beta release.

The GDM login is now themed to match the desktop. The distro comes with two menus; Cardapio (Default) but also includes the Axe menu that is disabled.

Known Issues:

  • Not working with Btrfs.
  • Encrypting “Home” during install doesn’t work. Can be done once installed with a 3rd party app.
  • The current build of VLC is a bit buggy. Can crash the desktop session. I would wait for an update or downgrade the release if you experience any problems. For now, the better alternative would be to use MPlayer as the default video player until VLC gets patched.

For more info read the Webupd8 write-up.

Just to let everyone know I am dealing with money issues at the moment, so I have had to take on more contract jobs to pay the bills (what has left me less time working on Pinguy OS). 12.04 is very close to being ready. At the moment I am waiting for a kernel update. I have read a few post with people having issues with their graphics. I am hoping the new kernel will cover/fix the graphic divers.

The final will be out very soon, but life has slapped me in the face so have to deal with that first.

This is very similar to the 11.10 release but this is using Ubuntu 12.04 as a base and is using the updated and much improved Gnome 3.4

So for info about this release have a look at the 11.10 release notes.

Go ahead and test this to the yazoo, this is going to be an LTS version, so it needs to be as close to perfect as possible. As you all know, the best way to do it, is by testing and reporting.

At this moment there are only a few mirrors up in Sourceforge, and there’s an alternative mirror here: http://survey.aquarium.org/pinguyos/ (Chrome doesn’t open it).

There are 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The 32 bit uses pae kernel so there’s no problems seeing more then 3GB of memory.

This post has nothing to do with Pinguy OS, but its a matter that could effect it so decided to do a post about it.

If you are unsure what SOPA is watch this:

I wrote a post on forum that was discussing SOPA because someone on there was saying he was in support for it because he gets his content pirated. So I decided to share my thoughts about Piracy:

If you are someone that suffers from Piracy then make your system easier to use then someone trying to pirate it. Most people are more then willing to pay for things if the service is easy to use and well priced. We have seen this with iTunes, Spotify, Steam and Netflix, plus many other services . Even Louis CK released “Live at then Beacon Theater” for $5 with no DRM and he made over a Million Dollars in a few days. More then he has ever made in one go.

I could go on about other things like people having to pirate a game because retail version of it had embeded DRM that broke it forcing people to Piracy just to be able to play the game they paid for, but I will be here all day giving examples.

There has been so many things come out that the Mass Media Industry said would kill them. But it has never happen. They need to learn and move with the times. They need to accept their old ways of doing things will just not work anymore. They need to adapt and re-think their pricing. They are still charging the same price for data for something that needs to be made and manufactured (CD’s/DVD’s ect.)

The Humble Indie Bundle asked people to pay what they feel and have made a huge amount of money. Also Radiohead and a few other people have done “pay what you feel” and done well. Louis CK calls it an impulse buy. He said he knew he got a lot more buys because he priced it at $5. And I agree (I was one of them). Sellers will get a lot more people buying something if its cheap/well priced. People are not dumb. They know that sending data cost the seller very little compared to something that is manufactured. People will not spend a huge amount of money for data so sellers need to price online content accordingly.

Also lets be honest here. A lot of things that get heavily pirated are things that have low ratings. It things people don’t want to risk paying to much money on in-case it’s something they don’t want. Most people that I know that have downloaded something that was pirated end up buying it if they enjoyed it. So actually many things that do end up being pirated get customers sellers wouldn’t of had in the first place. They would of just skipped on the purchase.

Piracy is also a good thing. TV shows For an example. TV shows that don’t get aired in the UK/EU, have bad air times and no one watched them, or old canceled shows. People that would be interested in them would have to risk paying for the DVD’s before even watching them. Letting people pirate TV Shows gives grater chance of increased DVD sells of the show. I know Arrested Development and Archer had an extra Box-Set sell because of this.

We got a long way to go, and we will see a lot of these legislates pop up along the way. Once the Internet is safe and secure from the Mass Media then they will be forced to rethink how they do business. Until then we face the Internet getting destroyed just because there is a bit of Piracy on it.

Piracy is an issue but its mainly done by poor people and children. People that would never buy the product anyway.

There is a problem with the 32-bit version where the menu isn’t tight against the side. This doesn’t happen when installed it only occurs in the live session.

To fix it in the live session open “Advanced Settings” and disable then enable GlobalMenu Extension.

Update: Webupd8 have done a post about the Mini. You can read about it here.

Due to a few things I don’t feel comfortable enough releasing this as a final. A few of the used apps are still in the alpha/beta stage and there is a few quirks like some of the proprietary drivers breaking the text and flash in Shell.

Gnome Shell is still pretty new and does need a little bit more work. The fallback mode is just about usable but isn’t ideal. As Shell needs 3D drivers to work and the proprietary drivers are breaking flash I can’t in good conscience release this as a stable release due to the current state of the fallback mode and Shell needing 3D.

Shell does work well if the open source drivers are working so for most people this shouldn’t be an issue, but people that need to install the proprietary drivers to get shell working have reported a few problems. I have tested this on ATI and Intel graphics cards and haven’t had any issues with the open source drivers.

I am very doubtful that there will be another release of the 11.10. Until Shell can work without 3D acceleration I am not happy calling this a stable product. Some work on this is being done over at Fedora so this will be possible soon but not just yet. I don’t feel Gnome 3.2 is mature enough to be called a stable product and thats why Pinguy OS 11.10 will stay as a beta release.

Release Notes.

  • Some changes have been made to the base system to improve speed and power usage. This is done by using zram, preload and granola.
  • There is better HD Video Decoding by using libcrystalhd3.
  • All the gnome packages are running on 3.2.1 like Totem Movie Player.
  • New Gnome 3 apps gnome-contacts and gnome-documents are included.
  • XBMC-PVR is installed so you can use your PC as a DVR.
  • Firefox is running the latest version 8 with all the needed plugins for content on the web including Moonlight for silverlight content.

For more info check out the release notes for the pre-alpha and alpha releases and this Webupd8 article.

I would also like to thank jan-hoffmann for his Gnome Shell scripts and also Joel Leclerc for relinux.

Both Conky themes are now working.

Gloobus preview is working great.

Alt+Mouse Wheel now zooms the desktop.

Also all the added extra drivers for wifi cards are now included and also the nouveau-firmware. This should help out people having problems with nVidia graphics cards and for those that couldn’t get wireless working.

Running the installer in the live session is a bit hit and miss. If you have problems with the installer in the live session, install it directly from the boot menu.
There is still an issue with encrypting the home when installing so leave that unticked for now.

VirtualBox is a no go. Its driver actually broke the 64-bit kernel. So to test the distro use it live with either a DVD disc or USB.

It still needs tidying up and bug fixing. The menu also needs some work. Need to hide and rearrange a few of the items in the menu.

EDIT# Alpah now out http://blog.pinguyos.com/12414219852

This is no where near finished but if you want to have a look at what I have so far you can. Many of the final apps are not included and a few of the installed apps might get removed/replaced in later releases. But what we have got so far is pretty stable, it’s just missing a few features that will be in the final.

The desktop is using Gnome Shell. If you have problems with graphics you can login to gnome classic/fallback mode to install the needed drivers.

There will be a MATE version but it isn’t anywhere near ready yet and is going to take some time before there is a release. I was hoping to have MATE and Gnome 3 on the same system but this is not going to happen. Some of MATE packages conflict with Gnome 3 so its going to have to be two different releases.

This will just about work in Virtualbox but will default to Gnome classic/fallback mode. Its also really slow. You are better off trying it Live.

If you have to use Virtualbox make sure you Enable 3D and install “virtualbox-guest-utils” package in the virtual machine.  If you don’t you won’t be able to log into Gnome Shell. It will just keep kicking you back into fallback mode and I haven’t started working on the Classic session yet.

Opened windows sometimes freeze and even force quitting them the window still shows up. Use ctrl+alt+backspace to kill X and go back to the login.

To enter the Shell dash hit the win/super key. There is no Compiz because it doesn’t work with Shell.

There will be no 64-bit version of the pre-alpha. I am only developing the 32-bit version until the system is more stable then I will start doing a 64-bit version. No point at this stage doing two different versions while I am still getting the fundamentals done.
